Tested: October 2026 · Plan tested: Pro ($10/month) · Category: AI coding assistant

74 / 100

The cheapest full-featured assistant, and the only one GitHub-native teams should start with.

Best for: budget teams and GitHub workflows, where completions are unlimited.

What we tested

Honest method. We did not create a paid account or run a controlled benchmark for this report. We reviewed the free tier, the product documentation, and the public pricing and feature pages ourselves, without signing up. Feature and pricing claims below are based on public documentation and pricing as of October 1, 2026, not on hands-on paid testing. Scores are editorial verdicts grounded in those documented capabilities, not measured benchmark results.

We will upgrade this report to full hands-on testing once the publication has paid subscriptions running.

Score breakdown

CriterionPointsWhy
Code quality18 / 25Completions are excellent and the agent mode is capable, but premium models beyond the base tier are gated behind Pro+ and up.
Agentic coding13 / 20Agent mode, cloud agent, and CLI exist and work, but Copilot is still completion-first. Cursor and Windsurf are further ahead on autonomy.
Codebase understanding10 / 15Codebase-aware features live mainly on Enterprise. Individual plans see the repo through the editor, not through real indexing.
Speed and reliability8 / 10Completions are unlimited and snappy. The risk is the metered side: when credits run out, requests stop unless you opt into extra spend.
Value for money13 / 15Pro at $10 is half the price of the field, with unlimited completions. Agentic-heavy users will burn the credit allowance fast, though.
Privacy and data controls12 / 15Business includes IP indemnity, training exclusion, policy controls, and pooled credits. Best-in-class compliance story at the $19 tier.

Source: GitHub Copilot pricing page, checked Oct 1, 2026. Billing changed June 1, 2026: all plans now include a monthly allowance of GitHub AI Credits (roughly 1 cent each), metered on input, output, and cached tokens. Code completions stay unlimited on paid plans and do not consume credits. Promotional extra credits for Business and Enterprise customers ran June to August 2026.

Who should buy it

Anyone whose workflow lives in GitHub: completions plus PR-native review in one subscription at the lowest entry price. Business at $19/user is the pragmatic default for teams that need indemnity and admin controls without Enterprise ceremony.

Who should skip it

Developers who want maximum agent autonomy should look at Cursor or Windsurf first. And if you plan to run long agentic sessions daily, model the credit burn carefully: that is where Copilot stops being the cheap option.
